This edition has been published to mark the exhibition Idealak / Ideales by Nerea Lekuona, produced at Artium Museoa, Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country, which was held in Vitoria-Gasteiz from 22 September to 10 December 2023.

In Idealak / Ideales, Nerea Lekuona (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1976) presents a dialogue between two of her most recent works, two large murals made up of the sum of items and concepts, artistic elaborations situated in the space created between various conflicting narratives surrounding the political period of Spain’s transition to democracy.
Following an investigation into the different documentary collections of the Civil Government of Alava, Lekuona produced her work entitled Laboratorio en Transición (Laboratory in Transition), a collection of more than a hundred objects, memory materials such as photographs, documents, plans and maps of the peninsula, which are used as a testing ground for the artist’s intervention. Works that play with the political imaginary and the messages issued by the government during these transitional years.
In Consignas (Slogans), produced on the occasion of this exhibition, Lekuona manually designs and formalises signs with words taken from the demands and protest calls that were chanted in the streets of the Basque Country during this period. Memory of a moment, which the artist situates in the present as part of her study of collective emancipation projects and their resources.
This exhibition is part of the programme Contexts from a collection, which showcases the practice of artists whose works have recently been added to the museum’s collection.
