JOËLLE TUERLINCKX AND ARTIUM MUSEOA REPAINT IN RED THE BELGIAN ARTIST’S A LEGAL MUSEAL TAG 58 M IN SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINE

The action aims to condemn Israel’s violations of the Palestinian population’s human rights in Gaza

The work A LEGAL MUSEAL TAG 58 m was created for Tuerlinckx’s exhibition at Artium Museoa in 2024

This morning, Artium Museoa, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country repainted in red the work A LEGAL MUSEAL TAG 58 m (2017, remake 2024), a white line located outside the museum that was created by Belgian artist Joëlle Tuerlinckx (Brussels, 1958) as part of the exhibition El caso de l(a casa) museo(a) (The Case of the [House] Museum), which the museum dedicated to her between November 2024 to April 2025. The action responds to a proposal by Tuerlinckx to condemn Israel’s systematic violations of the Palestinian population’s human rights in Gaza.

Today, on 9 October 2025, as part of the protests taking place in various cities throughout Spain to condemn Israel’s systematic violations of the Palestinian population’s human rights in Gaza, the artist Joëlle Tuerlinckx (Brussels, 1958) is proposing to repaint her work A LEGAL MUSEAL TAG 58 m (2017, remake 2024), which is located in the square outside Artium Museoa, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country. The work, a white line, a colour usually considered neutral within museum codes, will be painted red for this occasion.

Marking this line red invites us to reflect on all the limits that have been exceeded during this genocide, which has now been going on for two years, as well as the urgent need for a definitive ceasefire that will bring justice to Palestine. Through this public space gesture, the museum’s community and Tuerlinckx are joining in the condemnation and expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.

A LEGAL MUSEAL TAG 58 m (2017, remake, 2024) was presented at Artium Museoa as part of the exhibition El caso de l(a casa) museo(a) by Joëlle Tuerlinckx between 15 November 2024 and 27 April 2025.
