Irene Kopelman. Silueta y otras historias

From: Saturday, 03 October 2026

To: Sunday, 28 March 2027

This solo exhibition by Irene Kopelman brings together both earlier works created by the artist in various contexts and new pieces that engage directly with the geological formations of Peñas Carrias, on the border between the provinces of Álava and Burgos. This project is the result of several research and preparation trips to the region. The exhibition is largely structured by this new project as well as by the extensive body of editorial work developed by the artist since 2003.

Since moving to the Netherlands from Argentina in 2002, Kopelman has explored representations of what was constituted as “Nature” in modernity, including the notion of landscape, rooted in pictorial European traditions. After collaborating with many museum collections, her work shifted towards confronting landscape physically, further exploring the notion of representation which has taken her to many different geographies and ecosystems across the world.

Kopelman undertakes extensive long-term research in different contexts, geological formations, specific ecosystems or scientific laboratories. Each project demands different media in order to materialise her findings, as well as to translate experience into a durable support. Process is of outmost importance in her practice and carries big weight in the final outcome of her work.

As part of her practice, editorial projects become an important part of her endeavours where processes of research and reflections on representation can unfold coherently. These series of publication become also a way of disseminating her practice beyond the exhibition format.
