The project Ez dakit zer pasatzen den azken aldi honetan, selected as part of the Komisario Berriak 2020 competition call

The project Ez dakit zer pasatzen den azken aldi honetan (I don't know what's going on lately), selected as part of the Komisario Berriak (New Curators) 2020 competition call, analyses the driving forces of the Vitoria-Gasteiz Music Video Festival in the second half of the 1980s. Through the works of artists such as Juan José Narbona, Isabel Herguera or Francisco Ruiz de Infante, among others, it aims to revisit issues such as the visual representation that accompanied Basque Radical Rock, the embodiment that inhabited this environment or the interest generated by society and institutions for this form of popular culture, as well as for the medium of video.

The emergence of video as an artistic practice within the Basque context displayed a marked social and political influence on certain ways of doing things that shaped the process-based nature of the work, the art market, the institution and the art scene per se, and these represented a catalyst for artists at the time. The staging of events such as the San Sebastián Video Festival, Vitoria-Gasteiz Music Video Festival and Bideoaldia in Tolosa were clear examples of the interest on the part of institutions in broadening this context and offering the public the possibilities of a malleable language that multiplied visual imagery and thereby blurred its limits.

Project curated by: Ane Lekuona, Itziar Gutierrez and Iñigo Gómez Egiluz as part of the KOMISARIO BERRIAK programme.
