As in 2003, 2004 and 2006, ARTIUM presents Recent Acquisitions, now considered a reference exhibition of this centre-museum.

As in 2003, 2004 and 2006, ARTIUM presents Recent Acquisitions, now considered a reference exhibition of this centre-museum, as occurs in the case of the biennial Neighbouring Environments and Gure Artea. This exhibition represents the continuation of a strategy enacted by ARTIUM since its inauguration, namely, to "reveal" the increase in its patrimony, in other words, to show works recently added to this museum's own collection and, for reasons relating to the specific nature of the exhibitions programmed, have not yet been included in any of these. For this reason, this exhibition does not expound a thesis, with a specific argument, but intends to put on show a selection of the latest works added to the collection. On this occasion, the period covered by the exhibition corresponds to works that were added partly in 2006, 2007 and the first months of 2008, a period in which the total number of new works amounted to 71 purchased artworks, 38 deposited artworks, 2 donations and 1 dation.

Among the works selected there are a number of pieces from very different times and situations, that serve as an example of the different criteria that determine the purchasing policy of ARTIUM. On the one hand, an attempt is made to add to the collection further works by a number of important artists, such as Agustín Ibarrola, with the purchase of two excellent paintings dating from the 1950s and early 1960s from a family in Aragon, or Manuel Millares, with the recent purchase of a drawing through an auction room. Another purchasing criterion has been to increase the presence of important contemporary artists on the international scene, such as Laurie Simmons, Andrés Serrano and Vik Muniz. A photograph by the last of these, in which Leon cathedral appears painted with chocolate, has been purchased. The policy of monitoring new artistic manifestations and the work of emerging local artists, is also represented with works by Zigor Urrutia, Bene Bergado and Ángeles Agrela.

While these works are presented in the North Gallery of ARTIUM, in the exhibition Objeto de réplica. The VII Collection, a total of 37 new works recently added to the Collection are shown in the adjoining South Gallery (during the exhibition, the cartouche for these works will be labelled differently, indicating that the piece has been acquired recently).

Among these new acquisitions, there are a number that cannot be shown because they currently from part of an itinerant exhibition of the Collection which is presently touring a number of different cities. This is the case of Jorge Oteiza in Sao Paulo, and of a photograph by Carlos Irijalba in Tokyo.

In order to show as many works as possible, this selection has not taken into consideration works already presented at ARTIUM in exhibitions organised in 2007, such as Love, think and resist.Collection VI, or those selected for the forthcoming presentation of permanent collection, No more heroes.Collection VIII, which will be on show as of October.

In short, a broad set of widely differing works with regard to their format, technique, origin and the age of the artists, which are a constant reminder of the dynamic nature of this Collection.
